As the USMNT continued to perform well in Qatar, students at MHS enjoyed watching the national team play and hoped they’d make a deep run into the knockout stage.

The United States Men’s National Team missed the 2018 World Cup when they lost to Trinidad in the qualifiers, meaning they had not played in a world cup in eight years. Senior Jacob Elston said, “Watching and rooting for the USA with my friends has been really fun and has helped us enjoy more time together.” Senior Slater Goebel agreed and shared that he’d been watching the games with his friends, and doing so has helped them grow closer and form stronger bonds

Elston and Goebel shared how lenient they thought the teachers had been when it came to watching the world cup. The FIFA World Cup is being played in Qatar this year, meaning the game times often fall during school hours. Elston said, “Some teachers have been fine with me watching the games in class, but having class has definitely affected how much I watch it”. Goebel mentioned how he had a different experience, saying, “A specific teacher has asked me to put my phone away multiple times, and he doesn’t seem to care what I am watching.”

The USMNT had just recently earned second in their group, advancing them to the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup. Their next match is Saturday, December 3rd against a powerhouse Netherlands team that is ranked 8th in the world, while the USMNT is only ranked 16th. Elston and Goebel are both confident and think that the Americans can escape the game with a win and advance to the Quarterfinals.
