Monticello School district ended up getting a longer Thanksgiving Break this year, with the entire week of November 21-25 off from school.
A longer break gave students more time to relax and for themselves. Sophomore Kelly Rooney said, “I really enjoyed the longer break, as I got a chance to spend time with friends and family, and still have plenty of time to myself to play games and work on personal writing projects.”
Students and teachers had more time to spend with family and prepare for guests. APUSH teacher Mrs. Espenschied said she spent her break “preparing for family: cooking, cleaning and shopping for 15 guests. It was perfect.”
Although Mrs. Espenschied said she personally enjoyed the break, she also said, “Professionally, though, it gives us a shorter first semester than second semester. It makes it harder to finish projects on time.”
Sophomore Allie Weber said she would like to have another longer fall break next year, as well, saying, “I really enjoyed having a whole week off this year.”
Mrs. Espenschied agreed with Weber, but added, “If we could expand the semester somehow, it would be great.”
Overall, students and teachers seemed happy with the longer break, and perhaps this will become a permanent change to let both the students and teachers have some time to themselves during the busy end to the semester.
