A unique twist on a well known sport brought the community of Monticello together through laughter and excitement in the crowd. Players saddled up and got ready to help raise money for the Piatt County Animal Shelter and the Hope Lives Youth Ranch through a fun game of donkey basketball.

For many of the MHS participants, they were feeling uneasy and nervous. “My first thoughts were that I was a little nervous and I didn’t know if it would buck or not,” said Felix Davis. Despite the nerves, Felix still chose to participate, considering it’s something new to try! Felix said he wanted to participate because it was related to basketball, something he very much enjoys. For Davis, this was a fun and new opportunity to have fun and raise money for a good cause.

While the audience watched the fun happen, senior Molly Kinder was behind the scenes, organizing. According to Kinder, “Planning the donkey basketball fundraiser was a long and detailed process.” She explained that it took significant time to find riders, workers, send out forms, and communicate with the company providing the donkeys. Much planning and thought had to be put into it. We are grateful to the main faces of this event, Mrs. Rost and Molly Kinder.

With all the stress, the event turned out to be a huge success and an interesting watch. Molly shared that donkey basketball was a great fundraising idea, raising $1,800 for both the Hope Lives Youth Ranch and the Piatt County Animal Shelter. This was a huge success and a meaningful impact on the two organizations.

Overall, donkey basketball proved to be more than just a silly event. It created long lasting memories, laughter, and, most importantly, made a diference.
