Students, staff, and families filled the stands in orange for the annual Orange Out game at MHS. This event honors the memory of Natalie McDowell while raising money for St. Jude, a cause she cared deeply about.

Pep Club President, senior Pyper Burton explained why the tradition continues to stay alive. “Orange Out has remained such an important tradition because it is something everybody looks forward to. Natalie was beloved by all, so it is an event that is very sacred to the Monticello community.”

Events like pie in the face and raffle baskets helped raise money for St. Jude. Sophomore Paycee Burton, who worked the raffle basket table said seeing the community get involved was very heartwarming. “My favorite part about working the raffle was seeing all the little girls bid on their favorite basket and the smiles they had after putting their ticket in the box.”

Against Saint Thomas Moore, the varsity boy’s  basketball team played with tremendous respect and joy. Senior Nolan Buehnerkemper shared what it was like playing against the Sabers. “It was definitely nerve racking since we were playing for such a great cause and we wanted to honor Natalie and win. We showed up and showed out and winning felt even better knowing it was for her.”

For many students, Orange Out is not just about the game but also about the school spirit and unity it brings to the community. Senior cheerleader Margo Cassel reflected on the tradition during her final year, saying, “Orange Out is special to me as a senior because it’s one of the traditions that brings the whole school together. Seeing everyone in the stands wearing orange and supporting Natalie McDowell creates such a fun and energetic atmosphere.”

By the end of the night, the event raised $6,221, showing how the MHS community continues to honor Natalie McDowell’s legacy.
