The girls MHS soccer team has started off the season strongly with a current record of 8-1. The team showed its real potential in their matchup against Mt. Zion on Monday, March 25th. The girls ended the game with a score of 3-2. Two goals came from sophomore Addison Finet and the final, winning goal came from junior Megan Allen.
This game was a very special one, due to it being the first time in history the MHS girls soccer team has won against Mt. Zion. Energy and emotion filled the field as the buzzer that ended the game went off. Junior Elle Bodznick expressed, “The instant that game was over, the whole team cheered with excitement and relief. The feeling of a hard fought win is truly unmatched!”
Junior Megan Allen also expressed how she felt after the game was over, and the team had officially won. “It was surreal. That was a big win for us as a team and everyone could feel it. It was like a fever dream,” said Allen. Allen went on to speak about the energy after she made the last goal turning the score to 3-2: “I was just so amazed. I think it might have been my first shot of the game. I was extremely overjoyed that our team’s hard work was going to pay off.”
Bodnick shared her high point of the game: “My favorite moment of the game had to be the last thirty seconds. Although it was stressful, the effort that everyone put forth defensively to prevent a goal really shows what kind of team we are.”
Senior Tynley Jackson added on, “Assisting the tying goal felt good, but my favorite moment had to be celebrating with the team after the final whistle.”
Jackson later spoke about what led to success on the field against Mt Zion. “I think that we are successful since so many of us have played together before or are friends off the field. I remember playing Pirates with many of the girls when I first moved to Monticello, and at this point we have been teammates for 4+ years,” said Jackson.
Jackson then went on about her mindset during the game as well: “I went into the game with the intent to leave it all on the field. We had never beaten them before, so I knew it would be a tough game.”
Bodznick expressed her excitement about the team’s growth through this difficult game: “I think that the win against Mt. Zion was the first time this season that our team realized we can go as far as we put our minds to. The game was mentally and physically challenging, but the fact that we were able to defeat a bigger school only pushed everyone to want to achieve more!”
Similarly, Jackson shared her feelings on the team’s great success: “I am excited that we are doing so well, but I expected it with how much potential we had coming off of last year. I am just enjoying it and am happy I can say I had a successful last season.”
