After the Monticello Area Education Foundation fundraiser that was held at the old restaurant and brewery called Monarch, Mr. Woodham, the metals teacher at Monticello High School, was told that he can apply for a big grant for this class. “I was approached at a fundraiser and was told I should ask for more money from the board, so that my classes can work on bigger projects,” said Mr. Woodham. Mr. Woodham got together with Mr. Standerfer, and they decided to apply for a grant to buy an old airstream camper.
Mr. Woodham started reaching out to tons of different people that own old airstreams. Mr. Woodham’s idea was to buy an airstream that is completely broken down, and his classes would have to completely redo the entire thing. “My intentions are to not force kids to work on this project. I want kids to work on this project when they have free time, during classes, homeroom, or even their own time, not during school hours,” commented Mr. Woodham.
“I finally found a camper down by Springfield, thanks to Deacon Boman. The guy I reached out to let me tell him about my idea, and he was all for it. He let me pay a small amount of money as long as I went and picked it up. This camper is in such bad condition that I had to go pick it up and put it on the trailer because it has no wheels,” added Mr. Woodham.
Senior Deacon Boman helped Mr. Woodham with the search for an airstream. Boman commented, “I knew a guy who is friends with my dad, so I reached out and he decided to talk with Woodham. I got really excited if the guy was going to give us a good deal because then I can say I was apart of this big project.”
All of the industrial tech classes will have opportunities to work on this super cool project, and Mr. Woodham hopes to sell this camper and buy another one with the profits.
