The Sages baseball season has started off on an 11-0 run and they have signs of slowing down. A few weeks ago, on the 28th of March, the Sages had a back and forth battle with New Berlin, winning from a walk-off single by junior Jake Motsegood. Then, on the 30th, Lincoln came to town and it was a pitching battle. Both teams went 5 straight innings scoreless, then in the bottom of the 6th, sophomore Jax Bailey hit a solo homerun to get the Sages in the zone. The final score was 5-1. Next, the Sages traveled north to Tri-Valley to face off against the Vikings in another stunning victory, winning 4-3. Earlier this week, the team played Gibson City at home and later traveled eastward to Bismark to battle with the Blue Devils.
Senior Heyden Romano stated, “It feels great. Starting 11–0 gives the team a lot of confidence and energy early in the season. Everyone’s buying in, having fun, and it sets the tone that we expect to compete every game.” It’s not only him who is gaining some confidence from the wins. Junior Forrest Rawdin also stated, “It feels really good knowing that we are undefeated right now, but we can’t get happy with just that; we have to keep going and get better through this season.”
The hot start can be attributed to this team’s competitiveness; they want to win. Romano stated, “I think the team is off to a hot start because everyone has trust in each other, especially after the spring break trip. We have shown each other we want to compete and want to make another deep run.” Their chemistry is also a major factor in the team’s success. Junior Colton Shubert stated, “A lot of the guys on our team have been playing together for years and I think our chemistry as a group is what has led to a hot start.”
The team isn’t planning on slowing down anytime soon. Rawdin stated, “I think our biggest goal right now is to make it to super sections and get that win.” Romano had something similar to say, “The team goals are a regional championship, 20+ wins, and getting on the road to Champaign.”
