Boys swim into sectionals

With boys sectionals right around the corner, nerves are high and preparation is all-consuming.

About the mindset he has going into this big meet, junior Alaric Fulton said, “Just go into it hoping to do the best you can, and have fun. You shouldn’t worry about times or places. Just be there to support your team and have fun, and if you happen to do great, then that’s just a bonus.”

Coach Fulton echoed Alaric’s sentiments, saying, “The advice I have for my team before Sectionals is to HAVE FUN! Five of our eight swimmers this season are seniors. This may be the last time they ever swim competitively. Cherish each moment and love that time in the water! I want them to enjoy being together, cheer each other on and push each other, and try for good times!”

Coach Fulton added, “I’m most proud of the boys in general, as a cohesive group, this season. Their spirit, their connection, their camaraderie. These boys genuinely love to be together, in the pool and outside of it, and that has really made an impact on the overall feel of the team. They are often laughing with each other as they cheer each other on, give each other a hard time, and push each other. This has helped with incredible improvements in times. These young men just knowing they have each other’s backs has given them confidence to do their very best!”

The boys are so close, and they have a strong bond with each other. Fulton said his favorite memory is “the last home meet at Clinton, when most of the boys team from Monticello and Clinton were there. We were all hyping each other up and cheering for each other, and we all got some of our best times.”

The Sectional Meet will take place at Urbana Aquatic Center at 1pm on Saturday, February 18.
