Behind each successful student at Monticello High School, there often is a teacher who did more than just teach a lesson. Whether it’s creating learning environments that enhance students’ experience, helping kids who are struggling, or just being a friend, they help to change MHS for the better.
Ms. Hettinger, a MHS English teacher, has a way of making her classroom a safe place for all students. Sophomore Josh Barnick explained, “Ms. Hettinger makes her students feel good in the classroom and is willing to talk about anything.”
Barnick elaborated that she helps all of her students in problems extending outside of just the classroom, and many students come to her even though they may not be in one of her classes. “She is willing to help her students whether it’s school related or not,” he stated. Ms. Hettinger can often be found at various extracurricular events, supporting her students inside the classroom and out.
One of the other favorites is no stranger to this school. After first coming to MHS in 1996 for her student teaching, history teacher, Mrs. Cekander, is working on 30 years of staying loyal to Monticello and her students. Her dedication and kindness has impacted all, as well as enhanced the learning environment.
Sophomore Bella George expressed her gratitude for Mrs. Cekander’s fun and caring personality, stating, “What sets her apart is how she makes her students feel comfortable, supported, and respected. Something she doesn’t get a lot of credit for is her fun personality; she is always making jokes in the hallway when I am walking past her classroom.”
As far as a teacher who puts her heart into every activity and lesson she creates, Sra. Walk, an MHS Spanish teacher, is a clear favorite throughout the school. Though many students remark on the toughness of her classes, most agree that she still has fun classes with lots of laughter.
Freshman Addy Prahl shared that Sra. Walk always has her class laughing and having fun. “I feel like she’s made learning a different language fun for me; I have her at the end of the day, so I’m always looking forward to it,” Prahl stated.
Teachers like Ms. Hettinger, Mrs. Cekander, and Sra. Walk prove that education is about impact, dedication, and influence. MHS students are lucky to have them, and are thankful to all the time and effort they put forth.
