For the first time ever, the 2025-2026 winter cheerleading team decided to do a cheer competition in Pleasant Plains on February 21st, where they competed with many different high school teams. They had to have a band chant, a quarter cheer, and a half-time performance ready in the little time they had to prepare.
MHS cheer coach Ashlee Burton commented on the hardest part of the competition, saying, “I would say the choreography was the hardest, as I have never coached a competitive team. But with some help from cheerleaders who have competed before, we were able to conquer it. Another challenge was scheduling practices around games and other schedules. It was a struggle to get enough time to feel prepared. However, after some really long practices the week before the competition, we were able to come out successful! I am so proud of the dedication and hard work these girls put in.”
This was both the first and last cheer competition for senior cheerleader Bailee Wierman. Regarding her experience, she said, “Prior to competing in our first ever cheer competition, there were a lot of nerves! We had never done anything like this before, but we were also all very excited to have the opportunity to do something new that was our very own! Right before we performed, I was definitely very nervous, but I found it to be so much fun!”
Wierman also said, “The most exciting part of competing in our first cheer competition was seeing how excited all the other cheer teams were to be competing, as well as our own! We also got to wear our football cheer uniforms, which was very fun. And, of course getting to see all our hard work pay off was such a great reward.”
This was a learning experience for both the cheerleaders and Coach Burton. All of the girls loved participating in this cheer competition, as it was fun and a bonding moment for the team. This is something that Coach Burton would like to continue in future seasons, which will be a fun experience for both returning and incoming cheerleaders.
