What happens when love, chaos, and one very eccentric family collides on stage? Monticello High School’s production of The Adams Family answers that question with explosive energy, hilarious moments, and characters that you won’t forget.

While this show may be eccentric and a little crazy, it is also heartfelt at times. Each character has their own distinct quirk. For example, Uncle Fester, who is played by junior Callum McLearin, has no limits when it comes to energy. There are also hidden jokes sprinkled throughout the musical, which creates a humorous and lively atmosphere. This fun, hyper energy creates a great experience not only for audience members but for those performing on stage too.

Bringing the characters to life is essential in plays, musicals, or movies. The Thespians work tirelessly during each rehearsal to make this happen. Bringing characters to life means maintaining strong energy, being prepared, and keeping the audience entertained. Junior Brenna Cunningham shared “The combination of this being a dream role of mine and the fact that I absolutely love being on the stage and entertaining the audience makes it fairly easy for me to keep the energy up and entertain the audience.”

Though these characters may not need an introduction for some audience members, sophomore Sofia Cook, who plays Alice, believes that “being able to recognize familiar characters from their childhood or the humor from the show” will help keep the audience engaged. Bringing the characters to life on stage isn’t just about preparation. It’s also about how different actors view different characters. McLearin explained, “When it comes to Uncle Fester, there’s not really much of a limit on how energetic I’m able to be.” He continued to share that he wanted to portray Uncle Fester “as if he’s almost somewhere between a creature and a human.”

The hardest part of performing any show is the ending. Cunningham said, “You grow so attached to shows and characters, and when it all ends, it’s very jarring. You spend so much time working on something, and especially when you’re so passionate about theater, it’s very sad when it all has to end suddenly.”
