A winter dance debate

For the last few months, there had been a lot of discussion surrounding a winter dance being added to Monticello High School, such as vice versa. FACS Club and Pep Club were going to sponsor the dance, but they came to the conclusion not to have one.

Planning a dance can be a very difficult task. Many opinions, ideas, and planning go into a dance. Monticello High School only has Homecoming and Prom, and Prom is only for juniors and seniors. A lot of underclassmen would really enjoy having another formal dance they could go to.

All FACS Club and Pep Club members were going to help out with decorations and fundraising to make it similar to Homecoming. FACS Club sponsor Mrs. McCleary stated, “…I’m not sure how well it would be attended. I know that the National Honor Society tried to do a casual one last year and it didn’t go over very well. I wouldn’t want to be the ONLY adult/club in charge of the dance. FACS Club and Pep Club spoke a little bit about working together to host the winter dance.”

Pep Club sponsor Mrs. Burton stated, “I would think if a winter dance was added it would need to be more like a homecoming and less like a middle school dance. I would think something like a Sweetheart Dance, Vice Versa, or Winter Formal would be nice.”

NHS did a winter dance last year, but it was a more casual dance. Many people hope we can get another formal dance option for all grades. Burton stated, “I would make it a little more formal, make sure there is a DJ and photo booth option. Hopefully kids would be interested and want to go.”

FACS Club and Pep Club members would help decorate and fundraise for the dance. It would have to be more simple than Homecoming on decorations, but attire would be the same. McCleary stated, “I would like to see what some other schools do for their Vice Versa and even Homecoming.”

Many people would love to see another dance added to Monticello High School. Dances are inclusive and bring people together in one place. They are where a lot of high school students’ core memories form. This year there will not be a winter dance, but later down the road they might add one!
