Academic reflection

As the second semester of the 2025-2026 school year begins, students start registering for their classes for next year. Choosing classes to take each year to fit in your schedule can be stressful for some students.

Junior Addison Dorjahn reflected on the classes she wished she’d taken throughout her past years; “I wish I had taken APUSH because I feel like the advantages of taking it in preparation for college outweigh how hard it is.”

Junior Taylor Mabry had similar thoughts on the APUSH class, as it is a class she believed to be the most rewarding, “My favorite class so far has been APUSH. Yes, it’s very difficult and challenging and sometimes I hate it, but it really forces you to expand your knowledge and study skills. I also love love love history though, so that probably helps too.”

When choosing classes for sophomore or junior year, many students struggle to choose if they want to continue taking Spanish because foreign language classes tend to be more challenging and time consuming. Junior Suzanna Nichols noted a class she wished she had taken during her high school career, “I wish I would have taken Spanish 3 because I enjoy learning new languages, but at the time it seemed hard and too much for me. Although, I wish I would have expanded my knowledge of Spanish more.”

Mabry delivered thoughtful advice for the younger grades when picking classes to take next year, “My advice would be to stay locked in to the process. Whatever your sport or extracurricular, stay locked in and set goals for yourself. If you can stay focused and driven, you will be surprised at all you can accomplish in just a couple years. Also, I’d say to embrace the difficult moments. These years in high school seem stressful and awful at times, but in reality there’s so much to live for and strive for. What you do now in high school ultimately sets you up for a successful future and the person you want to become.”

All in all, it is safe to say that carefully crafting your school schedule is important in some aspects and stressful without the correct guidance in another.
