Back on the track

The Monticello Sages indoor track season is beginning to start, and the athletes are so excited! Slowly but surely, practices have begun a few days a week. The first indoor meet will be held on February 21st in Mattoon; be there to support the Sages!

Junior Taylor Mabry was asked what her personal goals for indoor track are, and she said, “My personal goal for the indoor track season is to run my current PRs and improve my racing technique and strategy. I have put in a lot of effort and training this winter and hope to see it pay off starting indoors.” This is Mabry’s third year being a part of Monticello High School’s track team.

Similar to Mabry, sophomore Macie Owen was asked the same question: what is your personal goal for this indoor track season? Owen said, “My personal goal for the indoor season is to get my 1600 and 800 times near or below my outdoor times from last year.” This is Owen’s second year on the Monticello High School track team. Owen also participates as a member of the cross country team, also staying consistent with her running every day to become strong and fast for her favorite sports!

With the overlap of athletes between indoor and outdoor track, people wonder which one is more popular. Sophomore Emily Matthews shared, “I prefer outdoor track because I really enjoy the meets and being able to socialize with my teammates.” The track team has a sister-like bond and makes it super enjoyable for all of the athletes! The girls have gained some good friendships over the years, even with people they may have never thought they would be friends with, all because of the Monticello track team!
