As the last semester of the school year begins, there’s only one thing on all the seniors’ minds: graduating. Many react to the news differently; some look forward to college, while others are reminiscent of their four years here at Monticello High School.
Many of the seniors are excited to graduate and keep their eyes on the future. Senior JD Bailey stated, “I’m excited to graduate and start a new chapter.” Most are setting their sights out onto college. Bailey stated, “My plans after high school are to go to Parkland and then transfer to UIUC. I chose this to save as much money as possible.”
Others also share many of these same feelings about high school. Senior Luke Smith stated, “I’m really excited this is my last semester of school. I’ve always liked the social stuff but everything is nothing special.” A lot has changed since the seniors first arrived at MHS. The school’s athletic facilities switched from grass to turf, almost every sport has changed their jerseys, and the school has been repainted. Although, the most important part for these seniors are their friends who have graduated and are now in college.
I think it’s a group consensus that they are the most excited to move on. Senior Lane Alexander stated, “I’m going to college to major in business. I don’t know where yet, but we will find out soon enough.” A lot of students are now starting to decide where they are headed next year. Smith stated, “I’m attending ISU to study cybersecurity and arrival intelligence in the fall. I chose this path because I have always loved technology and somehow understand it pretty well.”
One problem with being a senior is that they often stop caring at some point in the year; usually this is called “senior-sliding” or “senioritis.” Smith stated, “I honestly think I have had senioritis since the end of freshman year. I was kinda tired of it all after my first whole year.” While some students feel greatly affected by this, some don’t think it applies to them. Bailey stated, “I don’t think I’m senior sliding because I didn’t take very hard classes so this year has been a breeze so far.” Alexander agreed, “…it’s definitely tough, but I don’t think I’m senior sliding.”
