One of the amazing things at MHS is the library. Students go there to work, read, talk and interact with each other. Dr. Andrews just recently took over and created a new and improved library environment that students seem to love.
One of the things that Dr. Andrews has done for the library since her new start has been to create a library advisory club. This club is an amazing way for students to get involved and learn new skills here at MHS.
When asked what the main purpose of creating the Library Advisory Board was, Dr. Andrews answered, “I wanted to find creative ways to get students involved with activities on MHS campus by modeling real-world scenarios. It’s a great way to develop leadership skills, meet people, and practice talking with groups who have different ideas than you. And, it helps you feel like you’re making a difference because you have the space to give voice to your concerns.”
Students seem to love the environment Dr. Andrews has provided them with. She’s added a creative and amazing touch into the library. “What’s clear to me is this: students want to be in that space. They want to study in that space, they want to read in that space, they want to do group work in that space, and they want to craft and chitchat in that space.” Dr. Andrews even feels the love that students have for this library.
Students are always looking for ways to get involved, and this new library advisory board Dr. Andrews has added to the list of clubs is a great one to join. Sophomore Ellen Rider encouraged, “I think this is an amazing club for students to get into and looks great to colleges. What inspired me to join the Library Advisory Board was that it was a great way to get involved. I also really enjoy being a part of something and enjoy being a leader.”
When asked what role the Library Advisory Board plays in our school, Rider replied, “The Library Advisory Board is a student outreach program where students collaborate and help Dr. Andrews expand the media center with more collaborative ideas, activities, and ways to get more people involved. This plays a role for the school by making the media center a better place that includes more people. This also gives real-world volunteer opportunities and experience.”
Dr. Andrews doesn’t seem to be finished with her work at the library yet either. She’s already been coming up with new ideas and ways to keep the students involved and encouraged to learn at MHS. “Right now, that means that we are working on developing engaging and fun programming that gets students into the space. One thing they asked me to address is when and how students can use the library to study during school hours.” Dr. Andrews added, “So, I proposed a weekly calendar outlining what days are ‘group study’ days, which days are ‘silent study’ days, and which days are ‘study breaks’ (or days when we can chill out). I’ve been posting flyers around the school, and I’ve kept our media center Instagram updated weekly.”
Dr. Andrews’ dedication to the library and the improvement she’s made in our school should be appreciated. She works hard to create an amazing media center environment and welcoming community through the advisory board.
