Monticello High School’s Student Council hosted a blood drive on Friday, November 21, 2025 in order to help save lives. The Sudent Council played a huge role, providing snacks and getting people to participate. Both students and staff donated blood, and  when asked a few questions about it, there were some fun responses.

Student Council sponsor, Amber Allen, said, “Donating blood for the first time is definitely scary; however, once you are able to experience how your body will react it definitely is not scary after that. The majority of people are able to donate with little to no side effects as long as they hydrate and eat plenty before and afterwards.”

Junior Lilie Burse, who has had her blood drawn for testing at hospitals, but was a first-time blood donor at the school’s blood drive this year, said, “I was scared to get my blood drawn.”

Sophomore Lexi Cole countered, “I wasn’t scared at all. The only things I was scared of were potentially not being able to donate due to my hemoglobin levels being low, having a deficiency in iron, and then also being scared of passing out.”

Cole stated, “Afterwards, I wasn’t affected much. [I] barely had a bruise and didn’t feel sick or dizzy. I have gotten blood drawn before for testing and I did feel sick after, but you only feel sick if you don’t eat or drink before you get your blood drawn. To make myself feel better, I would eat some food and also drink lots of water after, and that normally helps me not feel sick.”

Burse said that she felt a little woozy afterwards, but she drank some apple juice and felt better.

Burse shared, “My favorite snack to eat after was trail mix.” Allen added that her favorite snack to eat after was fresh fruits and cookies, specifically Nutter Butters, which are her favorite.

In the spring time, there will be another blood drive, so come and donate some blood. Each donation has the possibility to save up to three lives!
