Christmas traditions

As Thanksgiving has ended, we now start to see Christmas decorations, hear people talking about their family traditions, feel the Christmas spirit, listen to Christmas songs, go Christmas shopping, bake seasonal cookies, and wrap gifts for loved ones.

MHS students have many family traditions. Junior Gehrig Quick said that his favorite Christmas tradition is “waking up on Christmas morning and seeing family and eating a yummy breakfast.” Freshman Mckayla Fitton expressed, “We go to a movie every Christmas. It’s my favorite because I just spend time with my siblings and my parents, and we don’t get to do that often.”

Most families have traditions that are unique, and only their family does. “One thing my family does every year is we usually complete a puzzle with around 1000 pieces over holiday break,” stated Quick. Fitton emphasized, “We go to my grandma’s to play and find the ornament pickle on the Christmas tree.”

Everyone has their favorite Christmas memory. For some, it’s opening gifts; for others, it’s eating a Christmas meal; and for many, it’s simply spending time with family.

Quick noted his favorite Christmas memory, saying, “One year, I thought I had unwrapped all my gifts, and then I went outside and I saw a trampoline in my backyard!”

Fitton added that her favorite Christmas memory centered around her family’s tradition of playing a game in which they have to search for the pickle ornament hidden in the Christmas tree. “I won out of the kids, and my aunt [won] out of the [adults], and it was funny because I’m the middle child and she was also the middle child, and my mom was like, ‘welp the two middles won.’”

No matter what each student’s family traditions are, each and every family has many things they look forward to during the Christmas season. These traditions can be passed down, or new ones can be made each year. These traditions, old and new, as well as important memories, are what makes the Christmas season special to each family.
