Since December is finally here and finals are approaching, students and staff at MHS found a way to stay uplifted through Christmas Spirit Week. From creative outfits to fun decorations, the week brought laughter and a much needed break from stress.
Throughout the week, the hallways were filled with students showing off their holiday spirit in different ways. One day that especially stood out to students was “Anything but a Backpack Day.” Senior Grace Johnson shared that this theme was her favorite because of “how creative everyone got.” She explained that seeing her classmates use items other than backpacks to carry their supplies made the day more fun. Johnson also believed that spirit week helped put students in the holiday mood, saying it reminded her that Christmas is coming and school is almost on break.
Freshman Mason Vance also highlighted “[Anything] but a Backpack day” as the theme he was most excited for. He said, “It was funny to see what people came up with and it gave everyone something to laugh about. Vance added that the spirit week made school more enjoyable in December, especially with finals approaching. According to him, it brought energy into the building and helped him to forget about the following week.
Teachers also enjoyed the festive atmosphere. English teacher Ms. Hettinger shared a Christmas tradition she looks forward to every year. On Christmas morning, she likes to open gifts with her son Noah first. Then, following that, her Mom and Dad come over and she likes to make breakfast for everybody. She described it as a “quiet, but meaningful tradition made more special because it reminds her of her Grandma Nancy.” She also loves to use her old kitchen utensils, which helps her to feel connected to those memories. When asked about a new spirit week theme, Ms. Hettinger suggested a theme such as “Light Up the Halls,” where students could decorate themselves with festive lights.
Overall, Christmas Spirit Week helped bring the school together during a busy time. Whether it was with creative outfits, shared laughter, or meaningful traditions, this week reminded everyone that, even with finals ahead, there is still time to enjoy the season and spread some holiday cheer with your friends and teachers.
