According to “The Evolution of American Choral Music” article in The Diapason, choirs became more popular in the 20th century due to the development of radio and television, which allowed more people to listen. On November 19, 2025, Monticello High School held its winter concert in the auditorium. The music they sang was from The Phantom of the Opera, featuring musical pieces such as “Think of Me,” where the female protagonist named Christine Daaé unexpectedly gets the main role in the opera. “The Point of No Return,” is the climatic song that starts before they confront their feelings. “All I Ask of You” is when the Phantom and Christine sing a love duet.
Senior Logan Feeler reflected on his first and last year taking part in the MHS choir, saying, “I have done choir for two years in middle school, and this is the first and last year being in choir during high school. So, I have been in choir for three years of my life.” Feeler went on to say, “It feels great because I won’t have to worry about memorising concert music, but I’m still a bit sad because there are really great people in the group who are just amazing to be around.”
Feeler added, “I thought the concert went really well. There is room for improvement, but it was still really great. We did our best, and all our hard work paid off in the end. I personally enjoyed it a bit, though I was pretty nervous standing in front of a lot of people and singing. Singing as a group really helped, though, since all the attention wasn’t just on me; it was dispersed throughout the entire group. Also, I was able to get away from work for the day, so I was really happy about that.”
Junior Amara Greear has been in choir for seven years, and is also a Madrigal. She reflected on how her participation in choir might impact her future, saying, “I likely won’t pursue any singing careers. As for skills learned, it helped me gain confidence, especially in solo singing. This also helped me with things like presenting projects in class. That will likely help me in college for assignments.”
The music sounded beautiful and people can look forward to the next concert on March 11th at MHS from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
