Students at Monticello High School are very busy with academics, sports, extracurricular activities, and, now, they are finally to the age where jobs are a part of their busy schedules too.

Junior Kali Griffith currently works at Tatman Village Nursing Home in Monticello. Regarding what motivated her to apply for this job, Griffith explained that money motivated her, so that she can save up for future plans.

Similarly, junior Liza Bodine, who works at the local cafe Just Bee Acai, explained that with money comes a lot more responsibility. Bodine noted, “Before having a job, I would blow through my money. But now that I can drive, I need to pay for things like gas and going out with friends. My job has helped me learn to save for when I’ll pay for all my own expenses.”

While many teenage jobs can be a lot to handle, Bodine enjoys her job at Just Bee, saying, “Working at Just Bee Acai, my experience has been easy, rather than challenging. I thankfully work in a great environment, with good staff, clean supplies, and tasty food.” Many locals echo Bodine’s feelings about Just Bee, noting the friendly service and excellent food.

While having a job can be fun and exciting for a teenager, a break is also nice. Griffith shared, “On my days off is when I spend the most time with my friends, family, and on my socials.” She also uses this time to catch up on her school work and other responsibilities.

For anyone on the fence or feeling uneasy about applying for their first job, Bodine shared words of wisdom and tips, saying, “I would recommend getting a job that has hours based on your goals and aspirations. If you’re wanting some extra pocket money for friends, I recommend working somewhere with fewer shifts and fewer hours, but if your goals are to pay for car payments, gas, etc., I would get a job that has more convenient hours for you to be able to work.”

Finding a job doesn’t have to be difficult. Use some of the resources offered to you, such as checking the local job listings in our school announcements, asking around town, or looking at community job boards are all helpful ways to help find that perfect job for you!
