As the weather is getting colder and the leaves are starting to go away, the Christmas trees are coming out and the snow is beginning to fall. With the holidays coming around the corner, do you get in the holiday spirit by decorating for Christmas or do you leave the pumpkins out for Thanksgiving? As the weather is getting colder and the leaves are starting to go away, the Christmas trees are coming out and the snow is beginning to fall.
When Molly White, a freshman at Monticello High School, was asked if she and her family had decorated for Christmas, she answered with, “No, we have not decorated for Christmas yet; we usually decorate the day after Thanksgiving.”
While some have traditions to wait to decorate, others like Connor Sheehan, a sophomore at Monticello High School, just can’t wait that long to decorate. Sheehan answered the question with, “Yes our house is mostly decorated. We started decorating the Sunday after Halloween.”
As some families have traditions of waiting to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving, other families have rules against it. These rules could be waiting to put certain decorations up or anything in between. When White was asked if her family had any rules for decorating for Christmas, she began, “No, we don’t have any main rules other than saving the Christmas tree [decorating] for last.” With the White family having minimal rules, the Sheehan family has none. Sheehan answered that same question with, “No, we don’t have any rules about decorating for Christmas.”
There are many varieties of Christmas decorations all over the world. Some people like to go all out for Christmas, while others don’t do as much. Christmas decoration styles and themes can differ greatly from snowflakes to gnomes to nutcrackers to stockings.
When Sheehan was asked what his favorite Christmas decoration was, he excitedly shared, “The Christmas tree is my favorite because it gets you in the holiday spirit.” Christmas trees are a very popular decoration, with the bright lights and colorful ornaments. How could you say no? When White was asked the same question, she answered, “My favorite Christmas decoration is our big nativity scene because it is so cute!” No matter how big or small, every decoration has a certain meaning or story behind it.
