The Monticello Sages began their 2025-26 wrestling season last week, with the first practice taking place on November 10th. The Sages are returning a number of seniors, all of whom have had time at the varsity level. Seniors Nate Darnell and Drake Weeks are both enthusiastic about their upcoming season.
“I’m very ready for this season and everything that might come with it. Some things I’m nervous about, like any expectations that people may have for me as a senior, but overall I’m looking forward to it,” said Darnell when asked about the upcoming year.
Fellow senior, Drake Weeks, had something similar to say, “I’m a little nervous for this year, mostly since I’m one of the most experienced guys, so I know some people might be looking up to me. Overall, I’m super glad that my senior year for wrestling is here.”
The seniors both have high expectations for themselves this year, as they both aim to make it to sectionals and beyond. “I want to go on a run in the playoffs and hopefully have a super memorable senior year that I can always look back on. Making sectionals is, and has always been, a goal of mine, and I know it is for lots of others too,” Weeks said when asked about his senior goals.
The Sages lost plenty of experience and success with the departure of last year’s seniors, but the team only sees it as a reason for optimism. When asked about his opinions for this year, Darnell stated, “I’m super excited for this year. Finally being at the top of the team and being able to be a leader is something I’m ready for. We lost some important people from last year, but I know that we can make up for it and people will fill the roles.”
MHS introduced all the winter sports teams on Sunday, November 16th at the Winter Sports Kickoff Banquet. The Sages open their season away at Clinton High School on December 4th, and will have their home opener on December 10th!
