Winter athletics are just beginning at MHS, and Sages Cheer is off to a great start with their basketball cheer season.
The girls are learning new cheers, practicing quarter performances, and warming up stunts. With the first basketball game right around the corner, they have a lot to do with very little time. Despite this, their passion and hard work make the whole season worthwhile.
Senior Captain, Pyper Burton, noted, “The start of basketball cheer can be stressful and overwhelming at times, since most of the girls are transitioning straight from football cheer to basketball cheer, with no break in between seasons. There is also a lot more material that must be learned for basketball cheer compared to football cheer, so there are a lot of factors and focus that go into practices to make sure everything is learned and cleaned before the first game.”
Makayla Harden mentioned something similar, “The start of basketball cheer is always great with seeing the new team, but it is also a very hectic part of the season. Everyone needs to work together, learning cheers and stunting.”
Many of the cheerleaders said that one of their favorite parts of cheerleading is the community of girls that comes with it. Harden exclaimed, “I love basketball cheer because of the community. As a team, we are all very busy and are together most of the time. I love the friendships we make and the atmosphere of the team being together.”
It is safe to say that the MHS cheerleaders love their team and work hard for it. We can look forward to another great season of cheering the Sages on from the sidelines.
