Talk of a possible cellphone ban has spread like wildfire across MHS, and this news has students worried about what their future will look like without their reliable phones.

Many teachers, including Mrs. Cekander, are in favor of this possible decision. She shared, “I would support a cell phone ban at MHS.”

On the other hand, junior Taylor Mabry stated, “I don’t think they should be permanently banned because they are very useful in emails, communicating quickly, and giving students a sense of security.”

The biggest question circulating is how this ban might be enforced and how that would affect everyone.

Mrs. Cekander expressed,  “Students would be less distracted during instructional time in the classroom. Students would socialize more with other students in the classroom, in the hallways, and in the cafeteria during lunch time. Students would not be exposed to the harmful effects of social media during the school day.”

Mabry presented a different view on how students will adapt to a potential cell phone ban, saying, “I think students would have trouble adjusting since we have been allowed to have them up until now. I think some would struggle with anxiety or worry about not having a phone on them. I think it’s good for students to keep their phones and learn how to be smart and respectful users. Someday, in a job, all of us will have our phones on us and it will be up to our learned habits to determine how we act. If we are able to put away phones now as teenagers, we will be smarter and more respectful adults.”

As the discussions continue, the cell phone ban at MHS is still a hot topic among students and teachers. Some say phones are distracting, while others say they’re useful for communicating and providing students with a sense of security.

One thing is for sure: whatever the outcome is at MHS, it will have a significant impact on the entire school.
