The first swim meet of the season took place at Centennial High School, which made a great environment for the Sages! Leading up to the first meet, the team had been working very hard at their late night practices, to show that they were committed and ready to compete.
All of the girls were very excited to start the season, especially the underclassmen, because they got to experience a high school sport for the first time. Freshman Ava Schrage commented, “I’m really excited to be a part of the team! I have been making new friends and connections that I think will last a lifetime. I also think we will go far this year; I’m super excited to see what the season brings!”
Sophomore Bella George shared similar thoughts about the start of the season, “I’m really excited for the swim season this year because it will be fun. I’m looking forward to getting to know all the new freshman girls and building new friendships. I think it’s going to be a great season where we all can push ourselves, improve, and also have fun together.”
From freshmen to seniors, there are only 10 members on the girls swim team. With there being a minimal number of swimmers, it is important that they all get along. In order to bond after team pictures at the beginning of the season, the girls scheduled a cafe run. They picked up donuts and coffee, then chatted about the upcoming season!
Again, with only 10 swimmers on the team, the upperclassmen have a huge impact on the underclassmen. Freshman Ava Schrage agreed, “When I started swimming, Mylin Bruhn got me interested in it. She told me how fun it was and how I would be good at swimming! I was 6 years old when I started, but I got better and better as time went on.”
For many sports, players oftentimes have a pre-game ritual, a good luck charm, or maybe even a superstition. Junior Callie Poynton shared, “I usually gather with one of my teammates and say a prayer before a competition. On top of that, I make sure I have a positive mindset as I go out to compete.”
The girls swim team is one of the smallest teams at Monticello High School, but with the growing friendships and amazing accomplishments, the coaches and swimmers anticipate to increase their squad in the next few years.
