On Monday, September 15, the MHS boys soccer team played against the Urbana Tigers at home. Here’s how some of the players were feeling leading up to the game.

About how confident the team was going into the Urbana game, sophomore Walter Saiger, one of the team’s strikers, said, “I can’t guarantee a win, but I can say it’ll be a good game.”

Urbana, a school that has around double as many students as MHS, has historically come out on top in prior matches against the Sages.

Luckily for the Sages, this game kicked off their week after four days of rest. Now that they’ve reached about the halfway point this season, some of the players are feeling the toll of this sport on their body and were grateful for even a bit of extra rest between games.

About how he’s holding up, junior Alex Kessler said, “Every sport comes with its little dinks. Me personally, I struggle a lot with leg cramps but they’ve been getting way…better as I’ve gotten back into shape. A lot of athletes on the team have injuries but we still play to what is expected of us.”

It’s been three weeks since the Sages played their first game against Warrensburg Latham, which the team won 2-0.

Regarding how much the team has improved since then, the Sages starting goalkeeper, sophomore Patrick Foster, responded, “I think we have improved a lot, at the start of the season we were trying to figure everything out, but now I feel like we’re a solid team.”

The Sages were put to the test the following day against undefeated St. Joseph Ogden, who carry a 12-0 record, losing 7-0.

The Sages will take on Rantoul at home on Tuesday, September 23.
