The Marching Sages need no reminder that the 24-25 marching band season was not as award-winning as past seasons. Coming off the high that was the 23-24 season with the show Frost, the losses faced left a bitter taste in the mouths of many band members. However, with the show theme selected and in the planning process, hopes are finally on the up and up.
Junior Scotty Owen said “The show theme is for sure my favorite marching show I’ve seen or done and we haven’t even heard the music yet!” The unique thing about the upcoming marching season is that students got to help choose the theme, sparking more positive reactions towards the theme selection than those of previous years.
Something that’s always a hot topic in band is who will be section leaders and what they hope to do. Junior Liam Bartlett said “I hope to be a confident and caring section leader who helps everyone understand the things they struggle with,” while Owen said that he “Hope[s] to transform the drumline into the best form it can be.”
Section leaders are selected through applications by any eligible students, possible nominations by the previous section leader(s), and ultimately left up to the judgement of the directors. With the current line up of possible candidates, the 25-26 season is shaping up to be one with great leadership.
Looking ahead, we see current freshmen excited to take on the new season with experience under their belt. Being brand new to band can push some fears to the surface that many might not have experienced before. Freshman Maggie McCleary said something intimidating for her last season was “Messing up in front of upperclassmen who will try to correct me, or worse, silently judge me,” but now with the experience she has gain, Maggie’s said “It’s safe to say I’ll be in it all four years.”
In the year to come, students are hoping to make a comeback and win as many competitions as possible. While that is the goal for every season, this next one will be fueled by the feelings of the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors of this year at the forefront.
