Every year during the month of April, juniors and seniors are recognized for their academics, activities, and character during the National Honors Society ceremony. Mrs. Malone, National Honors Society chair, selects these students into the group based on certain criteria. The first thing considered in order to be accepted is grades. You must have a GPA of 3.75 on the normal scale or a 4.75 on the weighted scale in order to qualify.

After sorting out who has sufficient grades, Mrs. Malone then sends out invitations to students. They are required to write an essay in order to be accepted. Students write down all of the activities that they are in and write a paper on the character trait that best defines them. Mrs. Malone then diligently reads all of the papers and makes her final selections of who is officially in the club.

Many students consider this an honor to be accepted into this amazing club. Senior Caleb Wood expressed, “It was a great privilege to be a part of this prestigious group. Everyone here is welcoming, hard working, and deserving to be in this club.”

While there are many different things that go into consideration, Malone believes that character is the most defining trait that a student can have. “I think the thing I am most proud about of all the kids that are in there is their good character traits because there are lots of temptations out there. [I am proud of] them just being leaders in everything that they do. I think that they are great role models.”

Those who were in the National Honors Society their junior year are able to work towards putting things into action the following year. However, they must reapply the next year in March. If they are selected once again, they will be recognized as second year members.

Malone shared why she thinks that the ceremony is an important part of being in the club: “The main purpose is to recognize the accomplishments the kids have gotten and the kids that have really good grades, are super involved in monticello highschool activities, and just have good character. It is just a public acknowledgement of those factors.”

Many students enjoyed being included in the ceremony and being recognized for their achievements throughout highschool. Wood went on to say “Getting dressed up all bougie for everyone and seeing everyone all put together really made me feel important and excited.”

The club will continue to make efforts towards raising money and running events. The club successfully threw a winter dance this year, an event that will hopefully become a tradition within the next couple of years.
