As we sneak closer and closer to the end of the school year, the seniors are starting to feel it. This is the time of year when seniors think about the future, but also take a look back at what got them to this point. Everyone remembers how they felt freshman year of high school, and so much has changed in the past four years.

A common theme between a lot of seniors is the development of confidence. “My confidence and my social abilities have gotten a lot better since freshman year,” said senior Maddux Quick. It’s a lot easier to carry yourself around confidently when you’re older than everyone. As a freshman, it can be quite intimidating when there are people everywhere who are four years older than you. Senior Carter Foran agrees as he said, “One thing that has changed for me since freshman year is my height, looks, and confidence as a person.”

High School gives freshmen the chance to come into school and create relationships with new people who may not be the same age. Before high school, there are rarely ever classes taken with people other than those in their graduating class. Senior Matt Swartz appreciated this opportunity. He shared, “I have met a lot of great people and I’ve been able to make a lot of great memories.”

With the uncertainties of being a freshman, some advice from your future self would be a relief. So, I asked seniors what piece of advice they would give to their freshman self. “I would tell myself to enjoy each day because it goes by fast,” shared Quick. “Just try to make the most of each moment.” High school is one of the best time periods of life, so Maddux’s advice to himself should also be considered by all underclassmen.

“Work hard in both school and athletics. Manage your time wisely,” said Swartz, sharing advice with his freshman self. Foran’s words to himself were, “Continue to stay involved and go to every sporting event. Just have as much fun as possible before it’s over.”

Almost completing all four years of high school comes with a lot of experience. Although it feels like it flew by, there is a common theme that almost all of the seniors share—to get involved, live in the moment, make a lot of memories, and just simply have fun while it lasts. Now, seniors will move onto the next chapter of life, remembering what it was like to first walk through the high school halls, feeling like it was just yesterday.
