This spring, the Monticello Agriculture Program took on a new project, having their sophomore Ag Science students be teachers and educate the district’s kindergartners. They introduced them to spring-related science and the basics of agriculture through fun and hands-on lessons, from planting seeds to learning the water cycle.
Entertaining the kids with different crafts while also teaching them the importance of agriculture was key to this project. Sophomore Emma Arnold said, “We tried making the activities with the kindergarteners hands-on so they would stay engaged and have fun.”
Entertaining a room of kindergartners is no easy task to tackle, but these students were able to get cheerful smiles and giggles from the kids as they were teaching. “My favorite part was seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces when we were teaching them the different subjects. It was heartwarming to teach them about my favorite season,” stated sophomore Claire Foster.
Not only is this a learning experience for the kids, but it’s also one for the sophomores. They get to be role models for the kindergartners and step into a leadership position in a positive environment. Lilie Burse also stated, “My favorite part is seeing them understand what we are saying and actually learning.”
All the high school students enjoyed teaching and working on their leadership skills while sharing their love for Ag with younger students. The pilot run of this new outreach program was a huge success.
