The Sages basketball season is starting to wrap up as their last regular season game is approaching as the Sages take on the Bismarck Blue Devils on Friday, February 21st. The Sages are currently above .500, being 16-12 on the season and 5-4 in the Illini Prairie Conference, but no end to a season is a completely happy ending, especially for seniors.
Senior guard Maddux Quick stated, “I’m overall pretty sad the season is coming to and end. Having played with these guys since 4th grade it’s gonna be hard to say goodbye.”
Senior Grant Gatsby had similar feelings about the season, “I feel it’s bittersweet because I love playing for Monticello, but all good things must come to an end in order to make them special.”
Earlier in the year, before the season had kicked off, I interviewed the team on their goals for the season. When asked about if they feel accomplished with the season, the Sages felt like they had met most. Rising star Sophomore Matthias Rudolph said, “I feel like my goals were met this year. I wanted an opportunity to play Varsity and I got that opportunity, and I feel like I had a positive impact on varsity.”
The Sages have had a long season and have spent a lot of time together and when asked about what memories were made during the season Quick said, “My favorite memory from this season was when we as a team all went to coaches house for some pizza, games, and film.”
Grant also had some good things to say about his teammates, “My favorite memory so far has been our team dinner when I look around the table while with my team I see how many great people I get to spend everyday with.”
The Sages last regular season game is also their Senior Night. This year the team has a large graduating class. Seven seniors who all created an immense impact on the program. Sophomore Luke Murphy stated in an interview at the beginning of the season, “The seniors look out for the underclassmen and they keep helping our team improve . I think the sense of leadership the seniors have this year will help us to do amazing things.”
The seniors have done an extreme amount for our school and the Monticello basketball program. They won a total of 48 games over their short time here at Monticello. The team is very thankful for them and their impact will continue to be felt in the years to come.
