The girls softball team at Monticello High School is gearing up for the upcoming season with intense training sessions in the gym or on a turf field. With open gyms taking place after school throughout February, the team is focusing on building strength, improving skills, and strengthening teamwork to prepare for a competitive season ahead.

Players have been attending weightlifting sessions to build strength and endurance. The girls have also been attending daily throwing to condition their arms. Senior Avery Schweitzer said, “I’ve been playing in indoor tournaments with my travel softball team, going to practices, and weightlifting after school.”

Most players on the girls softball team are embracing their role to help the team succeed this season. Schweitzer noted, “I want all the girls to feel comfortable around me and continue my role as a leader this year.” Whether leading drills, motivating teammates, or perfecting their individual techniques, every player is committed to contributing to the team’s overall success.

Many of these athletes are dedicating  extra time outside of school to sharpen their skills, whether it is by lifting weights or working on their throws, with many players having already set goals for the season. Junior Bailee Wierman exclaimed, “As a junior, I want to be a role model to the younger girls by working hard myself and striving to be the best teammate I can be!” The team is gearing up to compete at their best and make this season one to remember.
