This year, in particular, the Sage family has experienced several difficult losses. In times of need, MHS’ network of clubs and athletic programs steps up and supports the students and families who are currently struggling.
LifeSavers club, in particular, is extremely active. They participate in helping students struggling with drug abuse, difficult relationships of all types, academic problems, and anxiety.
Senior leader of LifeSavers Tatum Wichus said, “All LifeSavers are always available when students need support. The special thing about LifeSavers is that we provide a less intimidating environment as a friend, rather than an adult or teacher. We always listen and comfort our friends. Sometimes all people need is someone to listen to them.”
LifeSavers is an awesome group of kids who put their all into helping others. The members are active, hard working, and meaningful with what they say. Whenever there is a loss, the members come together and are there for whomever needs the support.
Additionally, there are many other clubs that make efforts to reach out to their peers and community in times of need in a variety of ways, as well, including Youth Alive, Rotary Interact, and Pep Club. These clubs offer prayer, participate in service projects, and host fundraisers.
This kind of care and concern for one another is just as evident in Sages athletics. This past fall, junior JD Bailey and freshman Jax Bailey lost their dad suddenly. The football team came together and had a cookout fundraising money to help out the Bailey family. It was incredible how the team came together to be there for their fellow teammates, JD and Jax.
JD and Jax’s mom Tara Bailey noted, “The amount of support JD and Jax have received from school is nothing short of amazing. When their dad passed away, both of the boys said they were going to quit football as it was just too hard to continue the tradition our family so dearly loved. Without missing a beat, the football coaches, athletic director and principal visited our home to check in on JD and Jax and our whole family. The promise they offered was that they and the whole brotherhood of the team would wait patiently for the boys’ return once they were ready. The boys moved forward with the decision to continue playing all while receiving the love and support of their team and coaches. Seeing each player with a sticker on their helmet with Michael’s initials touched all of our hearts beyond measure.”
“When the season finally kicked off and we found out the proceeds from the scrimmage pork chop fundraiser would be donated to our family, our hearts were once again filled with gratitude. The Monticello school district and town as a whole is truly phenomenal and we are blessed to be a part of such an amazing community.”
