Poetry Out Loud is something new that’s been introduced to MHS. Students read a poem out loud to their peers; it’s a way to express their feelings and emotions through a beautiful speech.
Mr. Crowhurst, the sponsor of the Creative Writing Club, said, “Poetry, to me, is our souls speaking. It’s different from traditional literature in that we don’t spend as much time reading and writing it, but the words are chosen so carefully and purposefully that it makes reading poetry an experience.”
Although only one person decided to participate, Jade Glauner described the feeling of performing. “I get nervous, probably every time I perform. But, the brain chemistry that goes on when you’re nervous and when you’re excited; they are the exact same thing. So I just remind myself that I’m actually excited about it.” This logic is a great strategy to calm her nerves down before her performance.
Mr. Crowhurst expressed what he feels when he reads poetry by saying, “Listening to poetry is a spiritual experience for me. Being able to hear the words of an author and put yourself in their proverbial shoes is an out of body experience.”
Reading and listening to meaningful poetry can be a way to find great advice and change your perspective on things in life. Glauner explained that poetry is special because “it’s ability to communicate a lot of feelings without necessarily a lot of words…”

Poetry can mean different things to everyone, it can hold different emotions and perspectives to anyone who chooses to read it. There are many positives to writing and reading poetry. If you are interested in Creative Writing Club, see Mr. Crowhurst or attend the next meeting on February 20th.
