The Monticello wrestling team is entering their final stages of the year, and they’re ready for it. The team has achieved many individual successes this year, highlighted by senior Hunter Romano’s 100th career win. When asked about his milestone, Romano said this, “It was so awesome being able to get to that mark. I felt so good after knowing that all my work has really come together for this year.”

It has indeed been a great year for Romano and others on the mat, but as of lately, injuries have taken its toll on the team. Seniors Russ Brown, Trey Leynes, and Hunter Romano are all out, as well as sophomores Colton Shubert and Zeke Young, among others.

The team, regardless of who is or isn’t competing, has been together as a group all season long. “We’ve all just come closer together as a group. We started off kind of rough but we’ve gotten to know one another and really stick together,” said junior Drake Weeks.

When asked about his own success, Weeks was very optimistic, “ This year has felt really good so far, especially with the slow year I had last year and the injuries I’ve taken.” Weeks had been recovering from knee injuries sustained over the course of the past year, so him being back to competing was an important moment.

Some younger members of the team have been thinking about the change of the team with the approach of regionals. “This year’s team has been a lot of fun for me. Being a sophomore now, I know everyone a lot better so it feels easier in the locker room to talk with others and be friends,” stated sophomore Will Osborne.

With the postseason being on the doorstep, the Sages are getting amped up and mentally prepared for the postseason. “I’m excited to get out there in the postseason and hopefully wrestle really well there,” said Osborne.

The Sages finish their season at home on 2/08 before heading to regionals on their path to state. Regionals for the Sages begins on 2/14 and 2/15 as the team and individuals look to make their way to the top.
