People were overwhelmed with affection this week when Dr. Hendrickson, an English teacher at MHS, brought her foster puppy, Red, to school.
Red is actually not Dr. Hendrickson’s first foster dog. She said, “Red is our fifth foster dog.”
Regarding her choice to foster dogs, she said, “I foster dogs, one because my husband won’t let me get more dogs and so this is a way for me to have more dogs without actually having more dogs. But mainly [I do it] because I have always loved dogs and like to volunteer with rescues, and this is a way for me to help. I always say that fostering dogs helps save two dogs. First, the one you’re fostering because you help them get a home. And then, once they are adopted, the rescues are able to take in more dogs and so you open up a space for a rescue there, too.”
Dr. Hendrickson seems to think Red is a bit exceptional. “For a puppy, he’s pretty calm, and he gets along really well with other dogs. So he’ll play with my dogs, like run around for 15-20 mins and then he’s content to lay on the couch for 2 hours. He is just very friendly and loves all people and loves all dogs. He’s good with kids, so I think he would do well in almost any home,” she said.
When fostering, Dr. Hendrickson has preferences when it comes to who she works with. She shared, “So I specifically work through a rescue called Hospice Hearts….” She also added how they go about the process. “The process is pretty similar through any rescue where you usually fill out a foster application. This just goes through your qualifications and recognizes the type of pet that you’re interested in fostering. Once you’re an approved foster, the rescue finds a good match for you. For instance, since we have two dogs, we can only foster dogs that are good with other dogs. And then, once they have a good match for you, they give you the dog and all of the supplies you need until they get their home.”
Red is still not adopted and looking for a home. If you’re interested in adopting him, please contact Dr. Hendrickson at this gmail. bhendrickson315@gmail.com
