The Monticello community gathered in full force this year for the annual Orange Out games, an event that blends school spirit with a powerful cause—raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Natalie McDowell, a beloved faculty member who tragically passed away a few years ago.
Natalie, known for her boundless energy and positivity, was a key figure in the community, often described as the “team cheerleader” by her colleagues. “Natalie had a smile that could light up a room,” said math teacher and pep club sponsor, Mrs. Tara Stetson. “She truly loved her job and the people around her. She was always the first to cheer others on and support those in need.”
Her passing left a void, but the Orange Out game, started in her honor, has become a way for her legacy to live on. “Natalie was so respected and loved that this event has grown every year,” said Stetson. “It’s amazing to watch new faces, both students and community members, getting involved each year.”
The event isn’t just about raising money; it’s about bringing the community together. The funds raised are donated directly to the Monticello St. Jude Run Team, a cause that has personal significance for many involved. “I’ve been raising money for St. Jude since 2010,” Stetson shared. “In my old district, a family lost their child to cancer, and we rallied behind them. It’s a cause that means a lot to me personally, especially knowing how much St. Jude’s support has helped families I know.”
This year, the Orange Out committee set a goal of raising $10,000 and recruiting ten new runners for the St. Jude Run Team. “As much as we love the donations, we really hope to see more people sign up for the St. Jude Run,” said the organizer. “It’s an intimidating 90-mile relay, but once you experience it, you get hooked. We hope to inspire more students and faculty to take part.”
The Orange Out game also serves as an opportunity for the students to learn about the importance of giving back. Senior Kinsley Neighbors, a student involved in the event, shared, “Participating in this fundraiser means so much to me. It’s about helping others, knowing that what we’re doing is making a difference for kids who need it the most.”
While the goal for this year is to raise $10,000 and recruit more runners, the impact of the event extends far beyond numbers. The overwhelming support from the community, year after year, is a testament to Natalie’s lasting influence. “This event is our way of keeping Natalie’s light shining,” said one faculty member. “It’s one of the best ways we can continue to honor her and the incredible impact she had on all of us.”
As the Monticello community continues to rally around this cause, the Orange Out game remains a symbol of both remembrance and hope, a reminder that the spirit of giving and community is alive and well in Monticello.
