No matter their plans, excitement was high in the halls of Monticello as Thanksgiving break approached. Students planned to spend their nine days off in a variety of ways.

Sophomore Emma Arnold is on the basketball team and had practices over the break, but still had time to spend with her family and eat good food. To celebrate Thanksgiving, Arnold said, “My family and I go to my aunt’s house in Indiana and spend a day or two with my mom’s side of the family.”

Sophomore Lexi Leatherwood was also a busy member of the basketball team that still had a few days off to spend the holiday with her family. Concerning what she does on Thanksgiving, she said, “We usually go to my grandma’s house in Mattoon and my cousins from Missouri and Philo come too.”

Regarding her favorite food, Arnold said, “I love homemade stuffing and corn casserole because it just feels homey.” Leatherwood added, “I LOVE rolls, corn and party potatoes.”

Arnold shared her thoughts about Thanksgiving. Arnold said, “It’s not my favorite holiday but it’s definitely in my top three. I love spending time with my family I don’t see often.” She noted that some of her other favorite aspects of Thanksgiving are “the amazing food that we have and the Black Friday shopping.”

Leatherwood, on the other hand, said that Thanksgiving is “one of her favorites because it has a lot of good food.” She added, “I also don’t get to see my cousins from Missouri very often, so it’s a lot of fun.”

Catie Swartz also added, “I like Thanksgiving but my family doesn’t do much because my cousins are much older and have their own family things going on. What i’m most excited for is Christmas because Christmas is my favorite [holiday].”
