Youth Alive is a new student-led christian club that was started, this year, by sophomore Taylor Mabry. The club’s goal is to educate and train young leaders to spread the love of Christ.
Mabry felt called to start Youth Alive by God. She stated that, “Missionaries named Billie and Katie Willis came to my youth group and talked about starting a club called Youth Alive in public schools and I just really felt called and that was what I needed to do.”
Mabry was homeschooled before entering Monticello High School. Launching into a new community meant she had to wait before enacting her goals. She explained, “It took me a year to get [Youth Alive] going because I wanted to get to know people first. I didn’t want to go in new and then start the club.”
Cole Basak has attended every club meeting for Youth Alive so far. He has always looked for ways to integrate Christ into his life. He stated, “I wanted to get involved with other christians at MHS…My favorite part is Youth Alive being a student lead club, and I feel like it’s helped me gain some friendships.”
Mabry started the club for exactly how Basak is feeling. She stated, “I wanted to create a safe space where I could have the opportunity to pray over people and share Christ with them.”
Basak and Mabry share their views on how they believe Youth Alive will help MHS grow in the future. Basak said, “It will bring more people together and that’s what we need in this school.” Mabry added to that by saying, “I think this gives them an opportunity to connect and to find like minded people or if they just want to find some friends or something different, this just gives them a positive place to come and they can have snacks.”
Youth Alive meets in Senora Emilie Walk’s classroom every 2nd and 4th Monday of every month during homeroom. The next club meeting will be held November 18th.
