Chatter emerged throughout MHS this past week as River Derby ran at Detweiller Park for the IHSA State Championship on Saturday.

About qualifying for the State Championship in his senior season, Derby said, “It means a lot to me as I haven’t made it to state since my freshman year with the team. I trained a lot this summer and it’s nice to see it all pay off.”

Though Derby progressed as an individual, he noted that his favorite moments from the season were those he shared with his team. , “My favorite memory was winning regionals as a team, we weren’t projected anywhere near first, but we all worked hard together to get the job done,” he said.

Among the many essentials for Cross Country runners are snacks. Derby mentioned, “My favorite pre race snacks are RxBars and a Celsius.”

Derby set his high school PR of 15:30.3 when it mattered most en route to a 35th place finish.
