Every year in the month of October, MHS celebrates Red Ribbon Week, encouraging students to live drug-free lives. During this week, MHS students engage in a variety of activities designed to spread the message of staying drug-free and making healthy choices. Lifesavers worked hard to spread awareness throughout not only the high school, but the whole district of Monticello.

“Red Ribbon Week encourages young people to make smart decisions when it comes to their mental and physical well-being,” states Dr. Hendrickson, who has helped over the years with planning and organizing Red Ribbon Week as one of the heads of Lifesavers.

Sophomore Emily Grabarczyk said “I think it is important because it shows that people care and want to help people stay drug and alcohol free in the high school and all the schools and our district.”

Throughout the week, Lifesavers ran different fun activities for students to participate in. The activities varied from dress up days to scavenger hunts to even lunchtime trivia. Students had the opportunity to win prizes while completing these activities, like a piece of candy or a gift card!

MHS Lifesavers also went to different schools to spread the message of Red Ribbon Week. Grabarczyk said “We also go to the grade schools and middle school to teach the kids about mental health and the use of drugs and alcohol and how they affect people and their bodies.”

Red Ribbon Week is a way to spread awareness to drug and alcohol issues and MHS tries to positively impact their students every year. “Many young students remember the Red Ribbon Week lessons that were taught to them by the Lifesavers, and some new Lifesaver members even mention that these lessons made them want to join Lifesavers!” says Dr. Henrickson.

This week always has a positive affect on our school district and will hopefully have a positive impact for our future generations.
