2024 marks another presidential election, and this year, many high school seniors had the opportunity to have their voice heard for the first time. Seniors with a birthday before election day, Tuesday, November 5, were able to vote.
In order to prepare for the election, senior Connor Kuntz said, “I read an article about what to expect on the ballot, so that has really given me some ideas on what I should think about when I’m voting.”
With this being their first time in the polls, some seniors were basing a lot of their ideas off of what they’ve learned from their home life and family. “My parents have had a very large influence in my political views growing up. Not in the way of being told who to vote for, but more so that I should vote for the candidate that prioritizes my values more than just voting for the candidate because of their party,” said senior Sam Burse.
The option for an early mail-in ballot has had its appeal on the new voters as well, with Connor Kuntz stating that he voted early. “I mailed in my ballot a few days ago and thought it was super cool being able to do that,” he said.
Making the choice when voting goes past more than just family ideals and social surroundings; it comes down to the individual in the booth and the policies they look for in a candidate. “My decisions have been somewhat difficult, especially since there’s a limited number of things that will affect me directly. I don’t really have any specific needs I’m looking for, but I’m still checking to make sure I won’t be negatively affected by either candidate, ” said senior Olivia Nichols.
This election, like all presidential races, will significantly impact our country. With a new generation being introduced into voting, new ideas will be brought into politics that will shape the future of our country.
