Doing one sport at MHS can be difficult, but doing multiple at a time is even more challenging. These students work hard and overcome challenges that come with being a dual athlete.

Usually these athletes have a strict schedule they adhere to each week. Junior Mylin Bruhn plays three sports, Cheer, Cross Country, and Swim saying “On Mondays and Wednesdays I practice with the cross country team to stay in shape for track, on Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to cheer practice to get ready for games and practice stunts with my stunt group. On Fridays I cheer at the football games. And then two times a week I swim at the Champaign YMCA for the Heat..”

Bruhn has to balance her three sports, showing the difficulties these athletes have to deal with within only one week. Cate Sanders is also learning how to balance her sports as a freshman, participating in both Cross Country and Golf.

These athletes have to learn how to prioritize sports if any overlapping happens with their schedules. Freshman Cate Sanders has decided to prioritize golf since she wants to play on the LPGA.

Playing multiple sports can cause lots of stress. Sanders stated “….many times choosing between one sport or another can be very challenging as I don’t want to disappoint either team.”

Being a dual athlete puts a lot of stress on athletes. Bruhn feels it as well and said, “…it is very stressful trying to balance all of the sports because there are so many different schedules. It is very hard to decide what practice to go to when. I have to prioritize the sports that matter the most while still being involved in the others…”

The advice these athletes gave was, “Don’t bite off more than you can chew. It can seem tempting to take on every practice every meet, but you need time to rest and recover. Even if that means taking a break for a day, you can’t overwork yourself”

Bruhn states “I would say to do what you love. If something becomes too hard to handle then let it go, but if you love what you do keep pursuing that. You only get 4 years to be a multiple sport athlete so make the most of it. Don’t forget to have fun!”
