Sages soccer kicks off

Sages Boys Soccer has kicked off the season with a rough start going 0-5 in their first three games. Their first game started with a loss on the road, losing 3-0 to WLMF (Warrensburg-Latham and Maroa-Forsyth). Later that week, the team trip to Fisher ended in a 7-0 loss to the Bunnies. In the home opener, the Sages struggled to score again losing to Oakwood 7-0. The Sages then the next week, losing to Arthur-Okaw 4-0 and Urban University 9-0.

Junior Lane Alexander takes on an opponent.

The Sages are led by their captains, Senior Caleb Wood and Senior Cannon Ureno. Concerning his role as a leader, Wood said, “As a senior I feel it’s my responsibility to teach this team the ins and outs to hopefully spark more future success.” Ureno added, “I know how important it is to set a good example because some of my decisions will reflect [on] the team.”

This year’s team worked with each other all summer and bonded throughout the hot summer practices. Regarding how they prepared over the summer, Ureno kept it short, saying, “Lots of running.” Wood added, “To prepare, we’ve had summer practices Sunday and Wednesday nights. It was very lowkey but helpful in the summer.”

Despite the early losses, it is clear that this year’s team’s chemistry is very high. Ureno stated, “The team’s chemistry this year without a doubt is unlike [anything] I’ve seen before. If we can keep that up I think we can get far.”  The Sages have an upcoming game at Urbana on the 16th.
