Auditions are one of the most stressful processes for actors. The nervousness, the anxiety, and the anticipation for what role you will get can be all-consuming. Senior Tyler Olsen, Junior Liam Bartlett, and Sophomore Gemma Vance discussed how they prepare for auditions and gave tips for new thespians.

Multiple factors play into auditioning, but two big ones are preparing for the audition itself and managing your mindset going into the audition.

Senior Tyler Olsen said, “If it’s for the musical, I look basically exclusively at the songs. The memorization of the scene comes easily because I’ve done it so many times at this point. So I’ll memorize the songs, like listening to it on the Broadway soundtrack…Then last year for Sister Act, I downloaded a little piano app on my phone to try and learn the notes more effectively.”

Sophomore Gemma Vance, discussed her mindset going into an audition and said, “I try to go in with confidence but not too much so I don’t seem over confident. I try not to make it seem like I will get the role but I want to at least seem to feel good after an audition.”

The MHS thespians put on great shows every year, like Sister Act, Puffs, The Great All-American Musical Disaster, and more. After the past musical, the Sister Act, all members of the cast signed the prop shown on the left. It is now proudly displayed in Mrs. Graham’s room, one of the sponsors for Thespians.

The program of events for this new school year has already been set. For the fall play which will be presented sometime this November, the thespians will be putting on The Bugs: a Greek Comedy. This play is about labor issues and ecological disasters put into a hilarious comedy. Next calendar year, the MHS thespians will put on the spring musical.  The musical May We All: A New Modern Country Musical will be presented during March 2025.

With new students coming in this year ready and excited to join thespians and audition, junior Liam Bartlett gave the following advice: “I think if you really want a role, just go for it. It’s no harm in trying. I think going in with confidence is key.”

On September 17th and through the 20th, the thespians will be holding auditions for the 2024 fall play The Bugs: a Greek Comedy. The musical audition dates are still to be determined.
