The transition from summer to the school year at MHS brings a shift in morning routines for students, as leisurely wake-ups and relaxed schedules give way to early alarms, structured plans, and a focus on preparation for the day ahead.
During the summer months, mornings are often unhurried, with the freedom to wake up naturally and enjoy a slower pace. However, once school starts, this relaxed schedule shifts to a strict structured one. Senior Macy Printy said, “So in the summer time, I think I’m way more disorganized and I sleep in late. [I] don’t really have a set schedule, but during school, I’m more put together…I go to bed earlier, wake up. I like to have a planned out day.”
The focus changes from enjoying the morning to ensuring everything is ready for the school day. The morning now revolves around efficiency: getting dressed and ready, eating breakfast, and getting to school on time. Junior Bailee Wierman said, “I also think I’ve started to care less about my appearance at school because in reality I’m there to learn and I don’t always need to spend all my time trying to look perfect. But of course there are also days where I do want to spend a little extra time getting ready so that I feel as if I’ve accomplished something good to start my day!”
This shift in routine for students not only marks the end of summer’s freedom, but also the beginning of a more regimented routine that sets the tone for the school year. Routines have changed over the years to fit what is best for each student. Printy said, “I think over the years, I’ve gotten more organized. I’ve become more OCD with that, wanting to have a set schedule. I like to know what I’m going to do throughout the day and…keep everything organized and neat.”
