The Monticello High School’s baseball team has been going strong this year and head into senior night against Rantoul with a 25-2 record, two games away from the school record with five games remaining left in the season. This Sages squad has been highlighted by pitcher Luke Teschke and 1st baseman Jacob Long.
This team’s success is no accident. Senior Luke Teschke attributed this success to the Sages hard work and said, “I think what has allowed us to experience this success is coming to the field everyday wanting to get better.” This Sages team often gets up early in the morning before school to work on their hitting. This is just one example of how hard this team works and it shows up on the field.
Being a part of a winning team is not a new experience for the seniors on this year’s team. They have experienced success, going to Super Sectionals their sophomore year and the Regional Championship last year. This experience has carried over to this year. Senior Jacob Long said, “Getting that experience in the postseason has taught us how to win big games and losing in the Regional Championship game last year, which we should’ve won, has fueled us to success this year.”
The Sages finish off the year with games against Rantoul Eagles, Mahomet Bulldogs, Saint Joseph Spartans, Clinton Maroons, and Mount Zion Braves. The Sages are expected to finish off the year strong and are looking for a big postseason run. Senior Jacob Long shared, “I am optimistic and hopeful that the team will make it far.”
IHSA Regionals will be held here in Monticello, so make sure to come out to support the Sages as they make their postseason run.
