Many students at MHS have summer jobs, some even working during the school year. These students have a lot of responsibilities, but are still dedicated to what they do.

Although Monticello is a small town with few establishments, students still find various places to work. Around 30 students from MHS will be working at the community pool in the following months. Sophomore Jamie Clodfelter shared, “I’m working at the Monticello Aquatic Center as a lifeguard.”

Students who are looking for jobs often consider their coworkers and environment before applying. Senior Rylan Good, who will also be working at the Monticello Aquatic Center, said, “I like being outside so lifeguarding seemed fun.  A lot of my friends worked there, so it seemed like a no-brainer.”

Some jobs where students are employed have a more professional environment than others. Employees working at the Monticello Aquatic Center enjoy the more relaxed working conditions. Clodfelter added, “We have a guard party at the end of the year, and everybody is really close, so it is nice to hang out and have fun.”

While some students chose to work full time jobs close to home for the summer, others may choose to be camp counselors for a shorter period of time. Sophomore Adi Sheppard shared, “I am working at Wildwood Hills Ranch in St. Charles, Iowa. I will be a camp counselor for at-risk youth under the age of 14. The camp is faith based and lasts the whole month of June.”

Some students choose to take advantage of connections they have to get jobs involving activities they are passionate about. Sheppard explained, “My uncle is the executive director of the camp, and I have seen the impact he has made. I wanted to do the same.”

Whether students will be employed this summer or not, everyone at MHS is hard working and passionate about what they do!
