School softball tryouts for the 2024 season start on Monday, February 26th, and everyone is amped up and ready to begin this fun and competitive sport! Softball is played by lots of people from MHS. Some play year round (travel), and others play only during the school season.
Junior Lucy Leatherwood is getting ready for her 3rd year of high school softball. “I am looking forward to playing on the new turf!” Leatherwood said. She also said that she cannot wait to do all the chants in the dugout, which makes the game more exciting for everyone.
Junior Avery Schwietzer is very excited for the school season to begin. Schweitzer plays year-round travel softball for the Mattoon Cobras and loves it. She prefers travel softball over school softball because her travel team has really good chemistry and plays really well together.
Although Schwietzer prefers travel softball, she still looks forward to school softball every year. This year, she is looking forward to seeing how the season turns out because she has high hopes for the new team due to all the freshmen coming up. She believes that the team could have a very successful season.
School season, although can be very long and tough sometimes, always brings along lasting memories that members all love to reminisce on. Schweitzer’s favorite memory from school softball is when, in sophomore year, they beat St. Joe, which is always a difficult team to beat for every sport.
School softball is a very fun sport to be a part of and gives people a big thing to look forward to when spring is coming up. Although playing in the cold and bad weather conditions and playing against other talented schools can be really hard, everyone makes loads of fun memories each year that keeps them wanting to continue to play in the future.
